Jerry Garcia was with the band the Grateful Dead, and was a songwriter, singer, and guitar player. Jerry Garcia’s name was Jerome John “Jerry” Garcia. He was born on August 1st, 1942 in San Francisco, California. He was named after the famous composer Jerome Kern. Jerry Garcia started taking piano lessons when he was just a little boy. His parents were both musicians, so he was brought up with music in his life. When Jerry was four years old, him and his brother was chopping wood when his right middle finger was accidently cut off. In 1960, Jerry stole his mother’s car, and as a punishment she made him join the Army. He went AWOL several times, and got into some trouble, so the Army gave him a general discharge in December of that same year. A few months later in 1961, Jerry was in an auto accident. He was thrown through the windshield, and suffered with a broken collarbone. That was the moment that Jerry Garcia decided to change his life around. In 1961, Jerry Garcia started performing in San Francisco. He earned five dollars for his first show. He met with Phil Lesh the following year, and the two used a tape recorder to record two songs to be broadcast on the radio.
In 1963, Jerry Garcia became the lead singer and guitarist for the Grateful Dead. He wrote the “Dark Star”, “Scarlet Begonias”, and many other songs. He toured with the Grateful Dead until 1995. Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead band members all began to become addicted to drugs. Jerry Garcia was addicted to heroin and cocaine, but entered a drug rehabilitation center in Oakland, California. He stayed completely clean from drugs from 1986 until his death.
When Jerry Garcia was fifty three years old, he was found dead at a rehab center on August 9, 1995. He had a heart attack. He had problems with drugs, but also sleep apnea, cigarettes, and sugar diabetes. Jerry Garcia was cremated, and on April 4th 1996. His ashes was spread into the Ganges River and the San Francisco Bay. Jerry Garcia didn’t just play rock music. He had a love for bluegrass and country music too.
