The Karate Kid is a great movie that aired in 1984. There is nothing better than the underdog succeeding. The Karate Kid is based upon a high school senior, Daniel LaRusso, who is played by Ralph Macchio. Daniel and his mother, Lucille moved to Los Angeles from Newark, New Jersey. Daniel didn’t want to move, but his mother had a job opportunity, so the two moved. Daniel’s apartment handyman is Mr. Miyagi. Mr. Miyagi becomes a father figure and mentor to Daniel.

Daniel becomes friends with Ali, who is a popular cheerleader. Ali’s ex-boyfriend, Johnny becomes angry of this friendship, and starts to take this anger out on Daniel. Johnny is a student at the Cobra Kai dojo. Johnny’s instructor teaches the students vicious forms of karate. They are to win and defeat at any cost. The problem is Daniel only knows very little about karate. The only thing he knows is what he has read in books, so Daniel knows his mother can’t afford karate classes.

Daniel pulls a prank on Johnny and his friends and gang from the Cobra Kai dojo at a Halloween party. This prank turns bad as Johnny and his friends gang up on Daniel beating him up severely, until Mr. Miyagi jumps in and single-handedly beats the gang. Daniel is in shock and begs Mr. Miyagi to help him learn karate. Mr. Miyagi and Daniel go to meet the instructor at the Cobra Kai dojo to see if they could resolve the issue between the boys, but with luck, so Mr. Miyagi agrees that Daniel would match the students if they would leave Daniel alone while he trained. The instructor agreed.

Mr. Miyagi’s way of teaching Daniel was interesting. Can you remember the saying, “Wax on, Wax Off”, and Mr. Miyagi showing Daniel exactly how to use his hands to wax the cars or painting the fence with up and down motions? It was funny seeing Daniel doing all this work. Daniel was thinking that Mr. Miyagi was just using him to do all the manual work, but at the end it was his way of teaching Daniel important karate motions.

When the tournament arrives, Daniel starts beating all the members of the opposing dojo. Daniel leg becomes injured, and the opposing instructor informs one of his students to take out Daniel by making the injury worse, which the student did. Fans were on the edge of their seat when Mr. Miyagi worked his hands to work the leg, so Daniel could continue the match. Daniel wins the match and title on one leg. The song, “You’re the Best” is playing and is a reminder that this underdog came through and won.
