Nirvana was a rock band that was formed by Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic in 1987. Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic attended the same high school together in Washington. The two got Aaron Burckhard to join the band as the drummer, and the three started writing music immediately. Kurt Cobain came up with the name, “Nirvana”. He said he wanted the band’s name to be nice and beautiful instead of the usual mean punk rock band names. Chad Channing started playing with the band as the drummer, because they replaced Aaron Burckhard for not coming to practice one day.

In 1988, Nirvana released their first single, “Love Buzz”, then released their debut album, “Bleach”. Nirvana went on their first national tour in 1989. In 1990, Dave Grohl auditioned to be the drummer for Nirvana, and was immediately was hired to replace Chad Channing. Nirvana started recording their next album, “Never mind”, which was selling over 400,000 copies each week, and sold over thirty million copies worldwide.

Nirvana released, “Puss/Oh the Guilt” in 1993. The song “In Utero” sold over three million copies in the United States alone. Nirvana started their European tour in 1994. Curt Cobain was found unconscious by his wife, Courtney Love on March 4, 1994. A month later on April 8, 1994, Curt Cobain was found dead due to self-inflicted shotgun wound to his head in Seattle, Washington.

In 2002, “You Know You’re Right” was released, which was an unreleased track that Nirvana had recorded before Curt Cobain’s death. The album, “Nirvana” was released that same month, which featured live tracks and unreleased tracks previously recorded. Nirvana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.

Nirvana had a unique sound. The dynamics of their music still lives on with other bands. Rolling Stone Magazine rated Curt Cobain as the forty-fifth greatest singer in 2008. Nirvana sold over seventy five million albums worldwide, and is one of the best-selling rock bands ever. Nirvana fans can keep this band alive with a Nirvana T-Shirt.
